CNIPA stands for China National Intellectual Property Administration, an intellectual property abbreviation.

Chinese government agency that examines and grants patents and registers trademarks, receiving more patent applications than any other office in the world. It took its current name in 2018, when trademark registration was brought under it.

Example: The company's Chinese utility model was granted by CNIPA in under a year.

Usage notes

Formerly the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO). China grants invention patents, utility models and design patents, and utility models are granted without substantive examination. Because China registers trademarks on a first-to-file basis, early filing is standard advice for foreign brands.
