CC BY stands for Creative Commons Attribution License, a software abbreviation also used in law.
Most permissive Creative Commons license: others may copy, adapt and use the work, even commercially, provided they credit the creator, link to the license and indicate any changes. Many open-access research journals publish under it.
Example: The article is published under CC BY 4.0, so you may reuse the figures with credit.
Usage notes
Research funders such as the Wellcome Trust and the Gates Foundation require CC BY for publications they support, and the Plan S open-access initiative adopted it as the default. Wikipedia uses the variant CC BY-SA, which adds a share-alike condition. A good credit follows the "TASL" checklist: title, author, source and license.
