1. Chief marketing officer
Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations
Executive in charge of marketing, including brand, advertising, market research, product marketing, digital channels and often customer experience and communications. The CMO is responsible for building demand and shaping the company's image.
Example: The new CMO shifted half the TV budget into creator partnerships and retail media.
CMO tenure is notably short compared with other C-suite roles; studies by the executive search firm Spencer Stuart have put the average at around four years. Some companies have merged the role into a chief growth officer or chief commercial officer. In healthcare, CMO usually means chief medical officer, and in fixed income it can mean a collateralized mortgage obligation.
2. Comfort measures only
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations
Care plan focusing solely on relieving symptoms such as pain, breathlessness and anxiety at the end of life, with treatments aimed at prolonging life, such as labs, vital signs and antibiotics, discontinued.
Example: Transitioned to CMO; morphine infusion for dyspnea, family at bedside.
Also called comfort care. Orders usually stop routine monitoring and add medications for pain, secretions and agitation. CMS quality measures exclude CMO patients from some sepsis and stroke metrics. In hospital administration CMO means chief medical officer.
3. Chief medical officer
Medical · Hospital Abbreviations
Senior physician executive overseeing medical staff quality, credentialing, clinical policies and physician relations in a hospital or health system. The CMO links the medical staff with administration.
Example: CMO reviewing peer case referral and sepsis mortality data.
Some organizations use titles such as vice president of medical affairs (VPMA). In end-of-life care, CMO means comfort measures only, a completely different meaning used in code status orders, so context matters. Pharmaceutical companies also have CMOs.
4. Collateralized mortgage obligation
Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations
Mortgage-backed bond that redirects cash flows from a pool of mortgages or MBS into multiple tranches with different maturities and prepayment risks, so investors can choose the exposure they want. Some tranches receive principal first, others later.
Example: The insurer bought a CMO tranche designed to pay out over five to seven years with limited prepayment risk.
Freddie Mac issued the first CMO in 1983, working with Salomon Brothers and First Boston. Planned amortization class (PAC) tranches offer the most predictable payments. In corporate titles, CMO means chief marketing officer.
