CISO stands for Chief information security officer, a cybersecurity abbreviation also used in business.
The senior executive responsible for an organization's information and cybersecurity strategy, risk management, security operations and compliance, typically reporting to the CIO, CEO or board.
Example: The CISO briefed the board on the ransomware incident and the cost of recovery.
Usage notes
Steve Katz, appointed at Citicorp in 1995 after a major cyber theft, is often called the first CISO. US SEC rules adopted in 2023 require public companies to disclose material cyber incidents and describe their security governance. The SEC's 2023 case against SolarWinds and its CISO, most of which a judge later dismissed, alarmed security leaders about personal liability. Pronounced "SEE-so".
