CKD-MBD stands for Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Systemic disorder of mineral metabolism in CKD that combines abnormal calcium, phosphate, PTH and vitamin D levels with bone disease and calcification of blood vessels. Management includes phosphate binders, vitamin D analogs, calcimimetics and dietary phosphate restriction.
Example: CKD-MBD: phosphate 6.8, PTH 820 pg/mL; start sevelamer with meals and cinacalcet.
Usage notes
The term was introduced by KDIGO in 2006 to replace "renal osteodystrophy", which now refers only to the bone biopsy findings. Vascular calcification helps explain the very high cardiovascular risk of dialysis patients. Secondary hyperparathyroidism develops as the failing kidneys retain phosphate and stop activating vitamin D.
