DKD stands for Diabetic kidney disease, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.

Kidney damage caused by diabetes, typically progressing from increased albumin in the urine to declining filtration and, in some patients, kidney failure. It is the leading cause of kidney failure in the US and many other countries; ACE inhibitors or ARBs, SGLT2 inhibitors, finerenone and GLP-1 receptor agonists slow progression.

Example: T2DM with DKD, UACR 450 mg/g; add finerenone after potassium check.

Usage notes

Also called diabetic nephropathy, a term often reserved for biopsy-proven disease. Annual screening with eGFR and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio is recommended for everyone with type 2 diabetes and for type 1 diabetes after five years. Kimmelstiel-Wilson nodules are the classic biopsy finding. Diabetic retinopathy often accompanies it.
