CCGT stands for Combined-cycle gas turbine, an energy abbreviation.
Power plant in which a gas turbine generates electricity and its hot exhaust produces steam in a heat-recovery boiler to drive a second, steam turbine. Combining the two cycles achieves efficiencies above 60%, the highest of any fossil-fuel plant.
Example: The new 1,200 MW CCGT replaced two retiring coal units on the same site.
Usage notes
CCGTs became the dominant new power plants in many countries from the 1990s, as in Britain's "dash for gas." They can ramp output fairly quickly, complementing variable renewables. Turbine manufacturers compete for record efficiencies, now around 64%.
