B20 stands for Biodiesel blend (20% biodiesel), an energy abbreviation.
Diesel fuel containing 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel, a common blend for fleets and farm equipment. Biodiesel itself is made from vegetable oils, animal fats or used cooking oil by a process called transesterification, producing fatty acid methyl esters (FAME).
Example: The city's snowplows run on B20 except in the coldest weeks of January.
Usage notes
Most diesel engines can use blends up to B20 without modification, while B100 (pure biodiesel) may require changes and can gel in cold weather. In the United States much biodiesel comes from soybean oil. Blends of 5% or less, B5, are often sold as ordinary diesel.
