CNG stands for Compressed natural gas, an energy abbreviation.
Natural gas, mainly methane, compressed to around 200-250 bar (roughly 3,000-3,600 psi) and stored in strong cylinders for use as vehicle fuel. CNG powers many city buses, garbage trucks, taxis and auto-rickshaws, especially in countries such as Iran, Pakistan and India.
Example: The city's CNG buses refuel overnight at the depot's slow-fill station.
Usage notes
CNG burns cleaner than diesel, with fewer particulates, but still emits CO2 and its methane leaks warm the climate. Unlike LNG, it is not liquefied. Renewable natural gas from landfills and farms can be used in CNG vehicles to cut net emissions.
