CANDU stands for Canada Deuterium Uranium, an energy abbreviation.

Canadian-designed pressurized heavy-water reactor that uses heavy water as moderator and coolant, allowing it to run on natural, unenriched uranium. CANDU reactors operate in Canada, Argentina, Romania, South Korea and China, and India builds related designs.

Example: Ontario's Bruce Power operates eight CANDU units on the shore of Lake Huron.

Usage notes

A distinctive feature is on-power refueling: fuel bundles are replaced while the reactor runs. CANDU reactors also produce cobalt-60 used to sterilize medical equipment. The general category is called pressurized heavy-water reactors (PHWRs).
