1. Cannabidiol
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Non-intoxicating compound from cannabis and hemp, sold widely in oils, gummies and creams and approved as the prescription drug Epidiolex for seizures in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome and tuberous sclerosis complex.
Example: Epidiolex (CBD) 5 mg/kg/day divided BID; LFTs at baseline and 1 month.
Epidiolex, approved in 2018, was the first FDA-approved drug derived directly from the cannabis plant. CBD raises levels of clobazam's active metabolite and, with valproate, increases the risk of liver enzyme elevation. Unregulated CBD products often contain more or less CBD than labeled, and some contain THC. In anatomy CBD means common bile duct.
2. Central business district
Geography & Places · City and Neighborhood Abbreviations
Commercial and office core of a city, the standard term for downtown in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and urban planning generally. Sydney CBD and Melbourne CBD appear on transit signs and property listings.
Example: Office vacancies in the Melbourne CBD rose after hybrid work took hold.
In the United States the plain word downtown is more common, but planners and economists use CBD. CBD more often means cannabidiol in health products, so context matters.
3. Common bile duct
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Duct formed by the union of the common hepatic duct and cystic duct that carries bile to the duodenum through the ampulla of Vater, alongside the pancreatic duct. A dilated CBD on ultrasound suggests obstruction by a stone (choledocholithiasis), stricture or tumor.
Example: US: CBD 9 mm with an echogenic focus distally; MRCP recommended.
A normal CBD diameter is usually up to about 6 mm, increasing slightly with age and after gallbladder removal. Stones in the duct can cause jaundice, cholangitis and gallstone pancreatitis and are removed by ERCP. In everyday usage CBD more often means cannabidiol, a cannabis compound.
