1. Central limit theorem
Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations
The theorem that the sum or average of many independent random variables with finite variance is approximately normally distributed, whatever the shape of the original distribution. It justifies normal-based confidence intervals and tests for sample means.
Example: Thanks to the CLT, the sampling distribution of the mean is roughly normal even though incomes are skewed.
A common rule of thumb says n ≥ 30 is enough, though strongly skewed data may need larger samples. Abraham de Moivre found an early version for coin tosses in 1733, Pierre-Simon Laplace generalized it, and George Pólya named it in 1920. It fails for distributions without finite variance, such as the Cauchy.
2. Charlotte Douglas International Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
American Airlines' second-largest hub and one of the world's busiest airports by aircraft movements, located about 6 miles west of downtown Charlotte, North Carolina. Most of its passengers are connecting rather than starting or ending their trips.
Example: My CLT layover is only 40 minutes, so I'm hoping we pull into a B gate.
ICAO code KCLT. Named for Ben Elbert Douglas Sr., the mayor who backed the airport in the 1930s. White rocking chairs in its atrium have become a symbol of the airport. The hub was built up by Piedmont Airlines and later US Airways before the 2013 American merger.
3. Charlotte, North Carolina
Geography & Places · City and Neighborhood Abbreviations
Nickname for Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina and a major US banking center, taken from the airport code of Charlotte Douglas International.
Example: CLT has become one of the fastest-growing metros in the Southeast.
Charlotte is nicknamed the Queen City after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III. NASCAR's Hall of Fame is downtown.
4. Charitable lead trust
Law & Legal · Estate and Family Law Abbreviations
Trust that makes payments to charity for a term of years, after which the remaining assets go to family members or other noncharitable beneficiaries. It can reduce gift or estate tax on assets passing to heirs, especially when interest rates are low.
Example: The family's CLT will fund the hospital foundation for 20 years before passing the assets to the grandchildren.
It is the mirror image of a charitable remainder trust. A CLT may be structured as a grantor trust, giving the donor an upfront income tax deduction, or as a non-grantor trust. Variants include the charitable lead annuity trust (CLAT) and charitable lead unitrust (CLUT).
