CDMX stands for Ciudad de México (Mexico City), a city and neighborhood abbreviation.

Official abbreviation for Mexico City since a 2016 reform turned the former Federal District into a city with the status of a state. About 9 million people live in the city and more than 21 million in the metropolitan area.

Example: Parts of CDMX are sinking by tens of centimetres a year as the aquifer beneath them is drained.

Usage notes

CDMX replaced DF on license plates, signs and government documents. The city stands on the drained bed of Lake Texcoco, where the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan was built. Residents are called chilangos.
