CHG stands for Chlorhexidine gluconate, a drug abbreviation.
Antiseptic used for surgical skin preparation, central line insertion and care, daily bathing of ICU patients, hand scrubs and as a 0.12% oral rinse for gum disease. It binds to skin and keeps killing bacteria for hours.
Example: CHG bath daily with 2% cloths; line dressing with CHG-impregnated sponge.
Usage notes
For skin prep, chlorhexidine 2% with 70% isopropyl alcohol outperforms povidone-iodine in reducing catheter and some surgical site infections. It must not be used in the middle ear, eyes or on the brain and meninges. In 2017 the FDA warned about rare but serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, to chlorhexidine products.
