Main psychoactive compound in cannabis, responsible for the "high". Delta-9-THC acts on cannabinoid CB1 receptors in the brain, and its concentration is used to label cannabis products and to define the legal line between hemp and marijuana.
Example: Edible label: 10 mg THC per piece; wait two hours before taking more.
THC was isolated in 1964 by Israeli chemists Raphael Mechoulam and Yehiel Gaoni. Synthetic THC (dronabinol) has been FDA-approved since 1985 for chemotherapy-related nausea. US federal law defines hemp as cannabis with no more than 0.3 percent delta-9-THC by dry weight, a definition from the 2018 Farm Bill that enabled hemp-derived THC products.
