BMA stands for British Medical Association, a professional association and labor union abbreviation.
Professional association and registered trade union for doctors in the United Kingdom, which negotiates pay and contracts with the NHS and publishes The BMJ. Its London headquarters, BMA House, was designed by Edwin Lutyens.
Example: BMA members voted to strike after rejecting the government's pay offer.
Usage notes
Founded in 1832 in Worcester by Charles Hastings as the Provincial Medical and Surgical Association, it took its current name in 1856. Its resident doctors, formerly called junior doctors, held repeated strikes in England from 2023 over pay. Doctors are licensed by the General Medical Council, not the BMA.
