ASME stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers, an engineering abbreviation also used in organizations.
Professional society founded in 1880 that publishes key engineering codes and standards, most famously the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), along with standards for piping (B31), elevators (A17.1) and engineering drawings (Y14.5). ASME code stamps on equipment certify compliance.
Example: The pressure vessel carries an ASME U stamp, required by the state boiler inspector.
Usage notes
The first edition of the Boiler Code was published in 1914-1915 after a wave of deadly boiler explosions, such as the 1905 Grover Shoe Factory disaster in Brockton, Massachusetts, which killed 58 people. The BPVC has been adopted into law in all US states and many other countries. Pronounced "ASS-mee" or spelled out.
