AVB stands for Atrioventricular block, a cardiology abbreviation.
Delay or interruption of electrical conduction from the atria to the ventricles. It is graded as first degree (PR interval over 200 ms), second degree (Mobitz type I or type II, with some beats dropped) or third degree, in which no atrial impulses reach the ventricles.
Example: ECG: second-degree AVB Mobitz II with 3:1 conduction; transcutaneous pads placed and cardiology paged.
Usage notes
Usually spoken and often written "AV block." Mobitz I (Wenckebach) shows progressive PR lengthening before a dropped beat and usually arises in the AV node, so it is often benign; Mobitz II drops beats without warning, arises lower in the conduction system and usually needs a pacemaker. Causes include degeneration, inferior MI, Lyme carditis, medications and cardiac surgery.
