ATG stands for Antithymocyte globulin, a drug abbreviation.
Antibody preparation made by immunizing rabbits or horses with human thymus cells, used to deplete T cells for induction and rejection treatment in organ transplantation and to treat severe aplastic anemia.
Example: Rabbit ATG 1.5 mg/kg IV daily x 3 doses for kidney transplant induction.
Usage notes
Rabbit ATG (Thymoglobulin) and horse ATG (Atgam) are dosed very differently and are not interchangeable. Infusions can cause fever, chills and cytokine release, so patients receive steroids, acetaminophen and antihistamines first. Serum sickness may follow a week or two later.
