CategoriesEducation & Academia

ATAR stands for Australian Tertiary Admission Rank, a standardized test abbreviation.

Rank from 0 to 99.95 that Australian universities use to admit school leavers, calculated from final-year results by state admissions centers. An ATAR of 80 means a student performed better than 80 percent of their age group.

Example: The bachelor of commerce had a lowest selection ATAR of 92.5 this year.

Usage notes

Queensland adopted the ATAR in 2020, replacing its OP (Overall Position) system. The ATAR is a rank rather than a mark, comparing students with their whole age cohort, including those who did not finish Year 12. In New South Wales it is based on HSC results.
