1. Computer-aided engineering

Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations

Umbrella term for software used to analyze and validate designs by simulation, including finite element analysis for stress and vibration, computational fluid dynamics, thermal, crash and multibody dynamics. CAE lets engineers test virtual prototypes before building physical ones.

Example: The CAE team ran crash simulations on 40 design variants before the first prototype was built.

Major CAE suites include Ansys, Abaqus, Siemens Simcenter and Altair HyperWorks. Results are only as good as the model's boundary conditions and material data, so simulations are validated against physical tests. Automotive companies credit CAE with cutting development time and the number of prototypes.

2. Certificate in Advanced English

Education & Academia · Standardized Test Abbreviations

Cambridge English exam at advanced level (CEFR C1), now officially called C1 Advanced, accepted by many universities in the UK, Australia and elsewhere as proof of English for academic study. It covers reading and use of English, writing, listening and a paired speaking test.

Example: The master's program accepts CAE with an overall score of 185 on the Cambridge English Scale.

Unlike IELTS and TOEFL results, which institutions usually treat as valid for two years, Cambridge certificates do not expire. Candidates who perform exceptionally well receive a C2 certificate. UK visa rules require a Secure English Language Test, so CAE is used mainly for admission rather than immigration.
