ARPANET stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, a networking abbreviation.
The packet-switched network funded by the US Defense Department's ARPA that became the forerunner of the internet. Its first host-to-host message traveled from UCLA to the Stanford Research Institute on October 29, 1969, and it adopted TCP/IP on January 1, 1983.
Example: The first ARPANET message was meant to be "LOGIN", but the system crashed after "LO".
Usage notes
The funding agency is now called DARPA. The ARPANET put packet switching into practice and gave rise to network email, with Ray Tomlinson's 1971 program introducing the @ sign in addresses. It was decommissioned in 1990, by which time NSFNET had become the US academic backbone. Its main original purpose was sharing scarce computing resources among research sites.
