1. Colorectal cancer
Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations
Cancer of the colon or rectum, usually arising from adenomatous or serrated polyps over about ten years. It is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, and rising rates in adults under 50 led US guidelines in 2021 to lower the average-risk screening age to 45.
Example: Mother had CRC at 48; begin colonoscopy at 38 and repeat every five years.
Screening options include colonoscopy every 10 years, annual FIT, stool DNA every three years and CT colonography every five years. With a first-degree relative affected, screening starts at 40 or ten years before that relative's diagnosis, whichever comes first. Hereditary syndromes such as Lynch syndrome and FAP account for a small share of cases. Staging uses the TNM system.
2. Clinical research coordinator
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Site-based professional who manages day-to-day trial activities under the principal investigator, including screening and enrolling participants, obtaining consent, scheduling visits, collecting data and maintaining regulatory files. The CRC is often a participant's main contact during a study.
Example: The CRC confirmed eligibility and scheduled the baseline visit.
Also called a study coordinator, or research nurse when a nurse fills the role. Professional certifications are offered by organizations such as the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and the Society of Clinical Research Associates. In oncology and gastroenterology CRC means colorectal cancer.
3. Costa Rica
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Sports code for Costa Rica used by FIFA and the IOC, while ISO uses CRI. Costa Rica reached the World Cup quarterfinals in 2014 after topping a group with Uruguay, Italy and England.
Example: CRC goalkeeper Keylor Navas made eight saves in the qualifier.
CRC is also the currency code of the Costa Rican colón and, in computing, a cyclic redundancy check.
4. Cyclic redundancy check
Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations
An error-detecting code calculated from a block of data and appended to it, so the receiver can spot accidental corruption. Every Ethernet frame ends with a 32-bit CRC, and ZIP archives, PNG images and storage devices use CRCs to catch damaged data.
Example: Interface counters show thousands of CRC errors, so replace the patch cable first.
Invented by W. Wesley Peterson in 1961. A CRC catches accidental errors very well but provides no security, because anyone can recompute it after altering data; cryptographic hashes or message authentication codes handle tampering. Rising CRC error counts on a switch port usually point to a bad cable, a dirty fiber connector or a duplex mismatch.
