AIH stands for Autoimmune hepatitis, a gastroenterology abbreviation.
Chronic immune-mediated inflammation of the liver marked by raised aminotransferases, elevated IgG, autoantibodies such as ANA or anti-smooth muscle antibody, and interface hepatitis on biopsy. It responds well to corticosteroids and azathioprine, and untreated disease can progress to cirrhosis.
Example: Possible AIH: ALT 640, IgG 2,100 mg/dL, ASMA 1:160; liver biopsy before starting prednisone.
Usage notes
Type 1 AIH, the common form, affects mostly women at any age; type 2, with anti-LKM1 antibodies, mainly affects children. Overlap syndromes with PBC or PSC occur. The simplified International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group score helps establish the diagnosis. Many patients need lifelong maintenance therapy.
