1. Child Tax Credit
Business & Finance · Tax Abbreviations · also used in government
Federal credit for each qualifying child under 17 who has a Social Security number, partly refundable for families with earned income. It phases out at higher incomes, beginning at $400,000 of modified AGI for joint filers.
Example: The CTC cut our tax bill by $4,400 for the two kids.
First enacted in 1997 at $400 per child, it rose to $2,000 under the 2017 tax law and to $2,200 starting in 2025, with inflation indexing afterward. In 2021 it was temporarily expanded to as much as $3,600 per child and partly paid in monthly advances. The refundable portion, the Additional Child Tax Credit, is claimed on Schedule 8812. In Indian salary offers, CTC means "cost to company."
2. Cost to company
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations
Total annual amount an employer spends on an employee in India and some other countries, including basic salary, allowances, bonuses, employer provident fund contributions, gratuity and insurance. Offer letters state compensation as CTC, so take-home pay is noticeably lower.
Example: The offer is ₹18 lakh CTC, but my in-hand salary will be about ₹1.2 lakh a month.
Because CTC includes items the employee never receives as cash each month, candidates are advised to ask for a salary breakup showing basic pay, house rent allowance, special allowance and deductions. In US tax, CTC means the Child Tax Credit.
3. Computed tomographic colonography
Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations
Low-dose CT scan of the gas-distended colon that creates two- and three-dimensional images to find polyps and cancers, often called virtual colonoscopy. It requires bowel preparation but no sedation, and US guidelines list it as a colorectal screening option every five years.
Example: CTC shows a 9 mm sessile polyp in the ascending colon; same-day colonoscopy arranged.
Polyps of 6 mm or larger are usually referred for colonoscopy, since CTC cannot remove them. The scan may reveal unrelated findings outside the colon, which can be helpful or lead to further testing. Also written CTC or CT colonography; distinct from circulating tumor cells, which share the abbreviation in oncology.
