1. Experience points

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations · also used in entertainment

Points earned by defeating enemies, completing quests or playing matches, which accumulate to raise a character's level or rank. Also used outside games for experience in general.

Example: Double XP weekend starts Friday, time to grind the battle pass.

The concept comes from Dungeons & Dragons (1974) and spread to nearly every video game genre. Also written EXP, especially in Japanese role-playing games. "XP farming" means repeating easy tasks to level quickly. Not to be confused with Windows XP, Microsoft's 2001 operating system.

2. Extra point

Sports · American Football Abbreviations

One-point kick after a touchdown, the everyday name for the point-after try. Box scores and fantasy football apps use XP or XPM for kicks made and XPA for attempts.

Example: The kicker went 4-for-4 on XP tries and added two field goals.

Fantasy leagues typically award one point per XP made and may deduct one for a miss. College kickers attempt the extra point from the 3-yard line, a shorter kick than in the NFL. In gaming XP means experience points, an unrelated meaning.

3. Extreme Programming

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations · also used in business

An agile software methodology emphasizing frequent releases, pair programming, test-driven development, continuous integration, simple design and close collaboration with customers. Good practices are pushed to "extreme" levels, such as constant code review through pairing.

Example: The team uses XP practices: pair programming every afternoon and weekly releases.

Created by Kent Beck during the Chrysler C3 payroll project in the late 1990s and described in "Extreme Programming Explained" (1999). Beck later signed the 2001 Agile Manifesto. Many XP practices, including CI and TDD, became mainstream even where XP itself is not followed. In consumer software XP usually means Windows XP, and in games experience points.
