1. Yards after catch

Sports · American Football Abbreviations

Yardage a receiver gains after catching a pass, measured from the point of the catch to where the play ends. High YAC numbers point to elusive receivers and offenses built on short throws to players in space.

Example: Most of his 140 yards were YAC on quick slants and screens.

Pronounced "yak". Analytics sites also report YAC over expected, comparing actual gains with what the situation predicts, and "air yards" for the distance the ball travels in the air; air yards plus YAC equal receiving yards. Yards after contact, a related running back stat, is tracked separately.

2. Yeast artificial chromosome

Science & Engineering · Genetics Abbreviations

Cloning vector built from yeast chromosome parts, including a centromere, telomeres and an origin of replication, that can carry very large DNA inserts of up to about 1-2 million base pairs. YACs were used in early physical mapping of the human genome.

Example: Early maps of chromosome 21 were assembled from overlapping YAC clones.

David Burke, Georges Carle and Maynard Olson described YACs in 1987. Their inserts often rearranged or combined unrelated fragments, so BACs largely replaced them. YACs remain useful when exceptionally large DNA segments must be moved into cells.
