WMATA stands for Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, a rail and transit abbreviation.

Interstate agency that runs the Washington Metro subway and Metrobus in Washington, DC, and its Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Metro's vaulted concrete stations, designed by architect Harry Weese, are architectural landmarks.

Example: WMATA says the Silver Line is single-tracking between Wiehle and Reston this weekend.

Usage notes

Pronounced "wuh-MAH-tuh." Metrorail opened in 1976 and now has six lines, the Silver Line reaching Dulles Airport in 2022. A 2009 collision on the Red Line killed nine people, the deadliest accident in the system's history. Riders call the subway simply "Metro."
