1. Avenue
Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations
Wide urban street, originally a tree-lined approach to a grand building; in many American grids avenues run perpendicular to numbered streets. Fifth Avenue in New York and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington are the best-known examples.
Example: Our new office is at 1600 Grand Ave, Suite 200.
The Postal Service standard is AVE; Av and Av. are also seen, especially in French and Latin American addresses. The word comes from French avenir, to arrive. In Phoenix, numbered avenues lie west of Central Avenue and numbered streets east of it.
2. Alta Velocidad Española (Spanish High Speed) (AVE)
Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations
Spain's high-speed rail service, operated by Renfe, which runs on the longest high-speed network in Europe. The first line, Madrid to Seville, opened in 1992 for the Seville Expo.
Example: The AVE from Madrid to Barcelona takes about two and a half hours, faster than flying door to door.
"Ave" also means "bird" in Spanish, a deliberate play on words. Since 2021 the market has opened to competitors, including Ouigo and Iryo, lowering fares on major routes. Spain built much of its network with EU funding in the 2000s and 2010s.
