WebDAV stands for Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning, an Internet & web abbreviation.

An extension of HTTP that lets users create, edit, move and lock files on a web server, so a remote server can be mounted like a network drive. Nextcloud, SharePoint and many file-sync tools support it.

Example: Connect to the Nextcloud folder over WebDAV and it appears as a drive in Finder.

Usage notes

Specified in RFC 2518 (1999) and later updated by RFC 4918. CalDAV and CardDAV, which sync calendars and contacts, are built on top of it. Jim Whitehead led the IETF working group that created it. Pronounced "web-dav".
