WASM stands for WebAssembly, an Internet & web abbreviation.
A compact binary instruction format that browsers run at near-native speed alongside JavaScript, letting code written in C, C++, Rust, Go and other languages run on web pages. Browser versions of design and CAD tools rely on it for heavy computation.
Example: We compiled the image decoder to WASM and cut processing time by two thirds.
Usage notes
Announced in 2015, supported by all major browsers by 2017, and made a W3C Recommendation in December 2019. The official short form is "Wasm", not all capitals, though WASM is widespread. Runtimes such as Wasmtime run it outside browsers, and the WASI interface gives it controlled access to system resources.
