VWD stands for Von Willebrand disease, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Most common inherited bleeding disorder, caused by low levels or abnormal function of von Willebrand factor, the protein that helps platelets stick to injured vessels and carries factor VIII. Symptoms include heavy menstrual periods, nosebleeds, easy bruising and bleeding after dental work or surgery.
Example: Heavy menses since menarche, VWF antigen 32%, activity 28%: type 1 VWD, desmopressin challenge planned.
Usage notes
First described by Finnish physician Erik von Willebrand in 1926 in families from the Åland Islands. Type 1, a partial deficiency, accounts for most cases, type 2 involves abnormal function and type 3 is a severe near-total deficiency. Desmopressin raises VWF levels in many type 1 patients, and VWF concentrates are used for others. Also written vWD; current guidelines prefer VWD.
