CategoriesMedical

ADAMTS13 stands for A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Plasma enzyme that cuts large von Willebrand factor multimers into smaller pieces, preventing excessive platelet clumping. Activity below 10 percent confirms thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in the right clinical setting.

Example: ADAMTS13 activity less than 5% with inhibitor present: immune TTP confirmed.

Usage notes

Most adult TTP is immune-mediated, caused by autoantibodies against ADAMTS13, while congenital TTP (Upshaw-Schulman syndrome) results from inherited gene variants; a recombinant ADAMTS13 product is now approved in the US for congenital TTP. Because results can take days, treatment usually starts before they return. Blood should be drawn before plasma exchange to avoid falsely normal levels.
