VUCA stands for Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, a management & strategy abbreviation.
Shorthand for an unpredictable, fast-changing environment in which plans are quickly overtaken by events. Business leaders and consultants invoke it to argue for agility, scenario planning and decentralized decision-making.
Example: In a VUCA world, a five-year plan is less useful than a clear strategy and quarterly checkpoints.
Usage notes
The term originated at the US Army War College in the late 1980s, drawing on the leadership theories of Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus, and spread into business writing in the 2000s. Pronounced "voo-ka." Some writers have proposed BANI (brittle, anxious, nonlinear, incomprehensible) as a successor concept.
