BHAG stands for Big hairy audacious goal, a management & strategy abbreviation.
Long-term, ambitious goal, typically ten to thirty years out, bold enough to galvanize an organization and clear enough to be understood without explanation. The moon-landing goal of the 1960s is the classic illustration.
Example: Our BHAG is to be the default payroll provider for every restaurant in North America by 2040.
Usage notes
Jim Collins and Jerry Porras introduced the term in their 1994 book Built to Last. Usually pronounced "bee-hag." Collins argued that a BHAG should fit with a company's core values and have a clear finish line so everyone knows when it has been achieved.
