UTQG stands for Uniform Tire Quality Grading, an automotive abbreviation.
US labeling system molded into tire sidewalls that rates treadwear, wet traction (AA, A, B or C) and heat resistance (A, B or C). A treadwear grade of 600 suggests the tire should last about six times as long as a reference tire rated 100.
Example: Compare the UTQG treadwear numbers: the 700-rated tire should outlast the 300-rated one by miles.
Usage notes
Set by NHTSA, but manufacturers conduct the treadwear testing themselves, so grades are best compared within one brand. Winter tires and light truck tires are exempt from UTQG labeling. Treadwear ratings are not mileage warranties.
