Computer that controls an automatic transmission's shift points, clutch pressures and torque-converter lockup, based on vehicle speed, throttle position and engine load. Adaptive TCMs learn a driver's habits over time.
Example: After the TCM relearn procedure, the harsh 2-3 shift went away.
Disconnecting the battery can erase a TCM's learned adaptations, so shifts may feel odd for a few days. On some vehicles the TCM is mounted inside the transmission and replaced with the valve body. Diagnostic codes from the TCM usually begin with P07.
