1. Topical corticosteroids
Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations
Anti-inflammatory steroid creams, ointments, lotions and solutions, the mainstay of treatment for eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis and many other skin diseases. In the US they are grouped into seven potency classes, from super-potent clobetasol (class 1) to mild hydrocortisone (class 7).
Example: Moderate potency TCS (triamcinolone 0.1 percent) twice daily to body for 2 weeks, then weekends only.
The UK uses four classes from mild to very potent. Dosing is often measured in fingertip units, the amount squeezed from the tip of an adult finger to the first crease, covering about two adult palms. Prolonged use of strong steroids can thin the skin and cause stretch marks, especially on the face and in folds. Fear of steroids ("steroid phobia") often leads to undertreatment.
2. Tata Consultancy Services
Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations
Indian multinational IT services and consulting company, part of the Tata Group and one of the largest IT services firms in the world. Headquartered in Mumbai.
Example: TCS will move the bank's core systems to the cloud under a ten-year deal.
Founded in 1968 as Tata Computer Systems, a division of Tata Sons. It became a public company in 2004 in one of India's largest IPOs at the time. TCS sponsors major marathons, including the TCS London Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon.
3. Traction control system
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
System that prevents drive wheels from spinning on slippery surfaces by reducing engine power and braking the spinning wheel. TCS helps a car accelerate on snow, ice and wet roads and works alongside ABS and stability control.
Example: Turn off TCS if you're stuck in deep snow; a little wheelspin helps dig you out.
Traction control uses the same wheel-speed sensors as ABS. Most cars allow drivers to switch it off, which helps when rocking a car free of snow or sand. Brands use various names, such as ASR or TRAC. It addresses wheelspin during acceleration, while stability control addresses sideways skids.
