USCGC stands for United States Coast Guard Cutter, a maritime abbreviation also used in the military.
Prefix for US Coast Guard vessels 65 feet or longer with permanent crews, ranging from patrol boats to polar icebreakers. Smaller Coast Guard craft are called boats rather than cutters.
Example: USCGC Polar Star broke a channel through the Antarctic ice to resupply McMurdo Station.
Usage notes
The training tall ship USCGC Eagle, a three-masted barque built in Germany in 1936, is a familiar sight at harbor festivals. The Coast Guard's cutter tradition dates to the Revenue Cutter Service founded in 1790. Cutters are used for law enforcement, search and rescue and drug interdiction.
