COLREGS stands for International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, a maritime abbreviation.
International "rules of the road" for vessels, setting out who gives way, which lights and shapes to display, sound signals and safe speed. They apply to all vessels on the high seas and connected waters, from supertankers to sailboats.
Example: Under COLREGS, the power-driven vessel must keep out of the way of a vessel under sail.
Usage notes
Adopted in 1972 and in force since 1977, replacing earlier rules. Also written COLREGs. Rule 5, requiring a proper lookout at all times, is cited in many collision investigations. US inland waters follow closely aligned Inland Navigation Rules.
