Usage notes
Created by the General Assembly in 1949, it began operations in 1950 and depends almost entirely on voluntary contributions. In 2024 Israel passed laws barring its operations in Israeli territory, and several donors, including the United States, suspended funding after Israel alleged that some staff took part in the October 7, 2023 attacks. It is pronounced "UN-ruh".
