UNHRC stands for United Nations Human Rights Council, an international organization abbreviation.
Intergovernmental UN body of 47 member states, elected by the General Assembly, that addresses human rights violations, appoints special rapporteurs and conducts the Universal Periodic Review of every UN member's record. It meets in Geneva.
Example: The UNHRC voted to establish a commission of inquiry into the alleged abuses.
Usage notes
Created in 2006 to replace the discredited Commission on Human Rights, it has itself been criticized because states with poor records win seats. The United States withdrew in 2018, returned in 2022 and announced another withdrawal in February 2025. UNHRC is easily confused with UNHCR, the refugee agency, which differs by letter order.
