UART stands for Universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter, an electronics & electrical abbreviation.
Hardware that sends and receives serial data one bit at a time without a shared clock, framing each byte with start and stop bits at an agreed speed such as 9600 or 115200 baud. UARTs link microcontrollers to GPS modules, Bluetooth modules, debug consoles and computers.
Example: Connect TX to RX and RX to TX, set the terminal to 115200 baud, and the boot log appears over the UART.
Usage notes
UARTs output logic-level signals, which RS-232 transceivers convert to the higher voltages of classic serial ports. Gordon Bell of Digital Equipment Corporation is credited with designing an early UART in the 1960s. USB-to-UART adapters are a staple of embedded debugging.
