1. Serial Peripheral Interface
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Fast, full-duplex serial bus used on circuit boards to connect microcontrollers to flash memory, displays, sensors and SD cards, using separate clock, data-out and data-in lines plus a chip-select line for each device.
Example: The display connects over SPI at 40 MHz, fast enough for smooth animation.
Motorola introduced SPI in the 1980s; it has no formal standard, so devices vary in clock polarity and phase settings, called SPI modes 0-3. The traditional pin names MOSI and MISO are increasingly replaced by terms such as SDO and SDI or COPI and CIPO.
2. Schedule performance index
Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations
Earned value divided by planned value, showing how efficiently a project is progressing against its schedule; an SPI below 1.0 means less work has been completed than planned.
Example: An SPI of 0.77 means we've done about three-quarters of the work we should have by now.
A known flaw is that SPI drifts back to 1.0 as a late project finishes, because all planned value is eventually earned. Walt Lipke's "earned schedule" method, introduced in 2003, measures schedule performance in time units to fix this.
