URM stands for Underrepresented minority, an academic abbreviation.

Term used in US higher education for racial and ethnic groups whose share of students or faculty is smaller than their share of the population, typically Black, Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander people. It appears in diversity statistics, admissions discussions and medical school data.

Example: The medical school reported that URM students made up 18 percent of its entering class.

Usage notes

After the Supreme Court's 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard ended race-conscious admissions, colleges stopped considering race directly, though some still report demographic data. Definitions vary by field; the AAMC uses "underrepresented in medicine" (UIM) instead.
