UML stands for Unified Modeling Language, a programming abbreviation.
A standardized visual notation for designing and documenting software, with diagram types such as class, sequence, use case, activity and state diagrams. Architects use it to communicate structure and behavior before or alongside coding.
Example: Attach a UML sequence diagram showing how the payment service calls the bank API.
Usage notes
Created at Rational Software in the mid-1990s by Grady Booch, James Rumbaugh and Ivar Jacobson, the "three amigos", and adopted by the Object Management Group in 1997. Heavy upfront modeling fell out of favor with agile methods, but class and sequence diagrams remain common in documentation and teaching. Tools such as PlantUML generate diagrams from text.
