TEDs stands for Thromboembolic deterrent stockings, a nursing abbreviation.
Graduated compression stockings, tighter at the ankle than the thigh, used to reduce venous pooling and the risk of deep vein thrombosis in hospitalized patients. They must be measured for correct size and removed daily so the skin can be checked.
Example: Apply knee-high TEDs bilaterally; remove for skin inspection each shift.
Usage notes
TED began as a brand name (Kendall's T.E.D. stockings) and is now used generically, often as "TED hose". Knee-high and thigh-high styles exist. Wrinkled or ill-fitting stockings can cause pressure injuries, and they are contraindicated in significant peripheral arterial disease. Anti-embolism stockings are not the same as the stronger compression stockings prescribed for chronic venous disease.
