UOP stands for Urine output, a nursing abbreviation.
Volume of urine a patient produces over a set period, measured from a catheter bag, urinal or collection hat. It is a key marker of kidney perfusion; adults are generally expected to make at least 0.5 mL per kilogram per hour.
Example: UOP 20 mL/hr x 2 hrs via Foley, MD notified, 500 mL bolus ordered.
Usage notes
Also abbreviated UO. Output below 0.5 mL/kg/hr for six hours is one of the KDIGO criteria for acute kidney injury, and falling output can be an early sign of shock or dehydration. Accurate hourly measurement usually requires an indwelling catheter with a urimeter in critically ill patients.
