1. Route
Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations
Numbered road, as in Route 66 or State Route 9, used in addresses for homes and businesses along highways; USPS abbreviates it RTE.
Example: The farm stand is at 1450 Rte 9W in Highland, NY.
Rt. and Rt are also common. Route 66, established in 1926 from Chicago to Santa Monica, became the symbol of the American road trip. British route numbers use letters such as A or M instead of the word route.
2. Ready-to-eat (RTE)
Units & Measurements · Cooking Abbreviations
Food safety and labeling term for foods that can be eaten without further cooking, such as deli meats, salads, bakery items and cut fruit. Regulators treat RTE foods as high risk for Listeria because no cooking step will kill pathogens before eating.
Example: Store RTE foods above raw meat in the walk-in cooler to prevent drips and cross-contamination.
The FDA Food Code and USDA rules require tighter controls for RTE products, including date marking of refrigerated foods held more than 24 hours. Raw meat labeled "not ready to eat" must be cooked first. In kitchens, gloves or utensils are required when handling RTE foods to prevent bare-hand contact.
3. Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ)
Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations
Ireland's national public broadcaster, operating television channels, radio stations and the RTÉ Player streaming service. Headquartered in Donnybrook, Dublin.
Example: The Late Late Show on RTÉ draws huge audiences every Friday night.
Radio began in 1926 as 2RN, and Irish television launched on December 31, 1961. The Late Late Show, which began in 1962, is one of the longest-running talk shows in the world. The name is Irish for "Radio Television of Ireland".
