Tbsp stands for Tablespoon, a cooking abbreviation.

The standard recipe measure for oil, butter, sauces and spices in amounts too large for a teaspoon. In the United States 1 Tbsp equals 3 teaspoons, half a fluid ounce or about 14.8 mL, and 16 tablespoons make a cup, so a stick of butter is 8 Tbsp.

Example: Whisk 2 Tbsp olive oil with 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar and a pinch of salt.

Usage notes

Also written tbsp, tbs, Tbs, tbl or simply a capital T; the capital letter helps separate it from tsp (teaspoon), which is one third the size. Volumes vary by country: the US tablespoon is about 14.8 mL, the metric tablespoon used in the UK, Canada and New Zealand is 15 mL, and the Australian tablespoon is 20 mL (four teaspoons), a difference that matters for salt and baking powder in Australian recipes.
